Course Management

5 Course Management Tips Every Junior Should Know

Here's something most junior golfers don't hear enough: you don't need to hit the ball farther to score better. You need to hit it smarter.

Course management is the art of making good decisions on the golf course. It's choosing the right club, aiming for the right spot, and knowing when to play safe versus when to take a risk. And for junior golfers, it can be a total game-changer.

1. Play to the Fat Side of the Green

When the pin is tucked behind a bunker or near the edge of the green, most juniors aim straight at it. That's a high-risk play.

Instead, teach your junior to aim for the center of the green — the "fat side." Even if they miss slightly, they'll still be on the putting surface instead of in trouble. This one adjustment can save two to three strokes per round.

2. Know Your Distances

Most junior golfers have a vague idea of how far they hit each club. "I hit my 7-iron pretty far" isn't a strategy. Spend time on the range finding real, consistent distances for each club.

Write them down. Put them in a yardage book. Use them on the course. When a junior knows their pitching wedge goes 75 yards, they stop guessing and start planning.

3. Tee It Up on Every Par 3

This sounds obvious, but so many juniors just drop the ball on the tee box. Using a tee on par 3s gives you a perfect lie every time. It's a free advantage — take it.

4. Think Backward from the Green

Before hitting a tee shot, look at the hole layout. Where is the best place to approach the green from? What distance do you want for your second shot?

This backward planning helps juniors pick the right club off the tee. Sometimes a 7-iron to the fairway is smarter than a driver into the trees.

5. Avoid the Big Number

Double bogeys and triples usually come from compounding mistakes. A bad drive leads to a risky recovery shot, which leads to a worse situation.

Teach juniors the "punch out rule": if you're in trouble, just get back to the fairway. Take your medicine. A bogey is always better than a snowman.

Putting It All Together

Course management isn't about playing boring golf. It's about playing confident golf. When juniors have a plan for every shot, they feel more in control. And when they feel in control, they play better.

JrCaddie yardage books are designed to make course management visual and intuitive for junior golfers. Each hole includes suggested landing zones, distance markers, and space for juniors to create their own game plan.

Smart golf is fun golf. And fun golf is the kind that keeps juniors coming back.
