Building Confidence One Fairway at a Time

Ask any golf coach what separates good junior golfers from great ones, and you'll hear the same answer over and over: confidence.

Not talent. Not equipment. Not hours on the range. Confidence.

But here's what most people get wrong — confidence isn't something you're born with. It's something you build.

And for junior golfers, it gets built one fairway at a time.

The Confidence Cycle

Confidence in golf works like a flywheel:

1. Preparation leads to better decisions
2. Better decisions lead to better outcomes
3. Better outcomes lead to belief
4. Belief leads to more preparation

The cycle starts with preparation.

That's why tools like yardage books matter so much for juniors. When a young golfer stands on the tee knowing their distances, understanding the hole layout, and having a plan — they feel ready.

And feeling ready is the first step to feeling confident.

Sports psychologist Dr. Bob Winters — known to many golf parents as "The Confidence Doctor" — has spent more than 50 years working with junior, college, and tour golfers on exactly this.

In a recent episode of The Golf Parent podcast, he put it simply: "We either win or we learn."

Confidence, in his view, isn't something a golfer is born with — it's built through habits, perspective, and learning to be fully present for one shot at a time.

He also has a name for what gets in the way: players get caught sizing up the competition before they even tee off — looking around, judging their own talent against everyone else's, and mentally conceding before the round starts.

His fix is almost stubbornly simple — he tells every golfer he works with to focus on three things: play your game, treat the golf course as the only real opponent, and take it one shot at a time.

Small Wins Matter More Than Big Ones

A junior doesn't need to win a tournament to build confidence. They need small, consistent wins:

  • Hitting the fairway on a hole they usually miss
  • Getting up and down from a tough spot
  • Staying calm after a double bogey
  • Beating their personal best by one stroke

These micro-victories compound over time. Each one adds a small deposit to the confidence bank.

And when the pressure is on — in a tournament, a tryout, or a big moment — they have reserves to draw from.

The Role of Preparation

Confident juniors don't just show up and swing. They prepare:

  • Before the round: They review the course, check their distances, and set a simple goal
  • During the round: They follow their plan, use their yardage book, and focus on one shot at a time
  • After the round: They reflect on what went well and what they want to improve

This cycle of preparation and reflection is what builds lasting confidence — not just a hot streak.

How Parents and Coaches Can Help

You can't give a junior confidence. But you can create the conditions for it:

  • Give them tools that make the game feel manageable (e.g., yardage book, breathing techniques)
  • Set achievable goals, so they experience regular wins
  • Praise the process (good decisions, composure, effort) not just the results
  • Let them struggle — overcoming challenges is where real confidence comes from, and they have to earn that on their own

Confidence Is a Skill

Just like putting or chipping, confidence can be practiced and developed.

It's not about being the best on the course. It's about trusting yourself to handle whatever the course throws at you.

JrCaddie's dashboard breaks confidence down into a Mindset Score across five areas — Emotional, Mental, Routine, Strategy, and Resilience — rated after every round.

Instead of a junior (or a parent) guessing whether things are trending in the right direction, the numbers show it: a junior might see their Resilience score climb over a season even in rounds where the scorecard doesn't.

That's the confidence bank made visible.

Because when a junior golfer believes in themselves, everything else follows.
